작가 노트 | Artist Statement
일상 너머에, ‘보이지 않는’ 영원한 진리의 세계가 있다고 생각하며, 이를 시각적으로 표현하는 작업을 하고 있다. ‘보이지 않는’ 세계를 이야기하려면 우리가 알고 있는 ‘보이는’ 세계가 전제되어야 하는데, 평소 ‘보이는’ 세계의 건축에 관심이 많아 자연스럽게 건축물을 중심으로 한 도시 풍경 이미지를 사용하고 있다. 스프레이를 이용하여 붓자국이 남지 않고 고르게 표면을 처리하고, 라인 테이프 자국으로 선과 면을 만들어 일상에서 마주친 풍경을 표현한다.
나의 작업은 ‘보이지 않는’ 것들을 표현하기 위한 ‘보이는’ 방법을 찾아가는 탐구 과정이라 할 수 있는데, 이번 전시에서는 두 가지 방법으로 <보이지 않는> 세계를 표현해 보았다. 첫 번째로 현실 이미지와 구름 이미지를 중첩하여 표현함으로써 구름은 잡힐 듯 말 듯한 것, 즉 ‘보이지 않는’ 세계에 대한 의미를 담았으며, 현실 이미지인 도시 풍경을 가리지 않고 다양한 색으로 표현하여 그 존재를 드러내도록 했다. 두 번째는 ‘보이지 않는’ 부분을 보다 주목하여 캔버스 일부를 완전히 비워 놓는 방법을 새롭게 시도해 보았다. 현실 세계에서 영원한 세계를 온전히 볼 수 없기에 부분적으로 잘린 원의 형태로 남겨두었는데, 이를 통해 궁금증을 유발하여 관객이 그 의미를 생각해 볼 수 있게 했다.
두 가지 방식의 작업을 관객이 비교해 볼 수 있도록 나란히 배치할 예정인데, ‘누구에게’ ‘어떻게’ 다가갈지 궁금하고 설레는 마음이다. 불안하고 어지러운 현실 세계의 소식들 속에서 잠시나마 ‘보이지 않는’ 것을 바라볼 수 있게 하는 계기가 되길 바란다.
I believe in the existence of an unseen world of eternal truths beyond our everyday lives and I am working on expressing it visually. To articulate this unseen world, it is essential to address the world we know—the 'visible' world. I usually use cityscape images with a focus on architecture to represent the 'visible' world.
My artistic exploration can be seen as a journey to find visible ways to represent the things not seen. In this exhibition, I attempted to portray the 'unseen' world through two distinct methods. Firstly, I overlaid images of the 'visible' world with cloud images, where the ethereal nature of clouds serves as a metaphor for the 'unseen' world. Secondly, I focused more on the 'unseen' aspect by leaving a part of the canvas completely empty. Since we cannot fully perceive the eternal world in reality, I depicted it in the form of a partially truncated circle, sparking curiosity and encouraging viewers to contemplate its meaning.
The two methods of my work will be displayed side by side, enabling viewers to make comparisons. I am curious and excited about how my work will resonate with individuals and how it will connect with them. Amidst the unsettling and chaotic news of the real world, I hope my work serves as a momentary opportunity to glimpse the 'unseen.'
