작가 노트 | Artist Statement
'인간은 천 개의 페르소나를 갖고 상황에 맞게 꺼내 쓴다.' - 칼 융
페르소나는 고대 그리스에서 배우들이 쓰던 가면을 말한다. 심리학자 칼 융은 인간은 천 개, 만 개의 페르소나를 갖고 상황에 따라 타인에게 비치는 외적인 성격을 바꾸는 인간의 본질과 다양성을 설명한다. 현대 사회에서는 다양한 공간, 순간에서 자신에게 맞는 가면을 바꿔 쓰듯이 다양한 정체성을 가진다고 하여 '멀티 페르소나'라고 부르기도 한다.
튀니지의 낯선 거리와 건물들.
천천히 주변을 걷다 걸음을 멈추고
그 도시 건물들의 얼굴을 바라보았다.
내가 생활하고 경험했던 공간과는 다른 이질감이 느껴진다.
거울을 통해 나와 마주할 때처럼 낯설지만 친숙한 느낌이 조금 당황스러웠다.
그곳에 낯선 내가 있다. 하지만 나였다.
거울조차 내 모습을 변형시키는데 타인이 보는 나는 어떨까?
도시 공간에 결속되어 있는 나의 정체성은 무언가를 결정할 수 없던 방황 시기에 찾아온 외부적 압박과 미결정적 생각들, 그리고 이후 차츰 정돈되는 순간들과 더불어 갖게 된 치유의 감정과 사유들을 공감할 수 있는 이미지의 조합이나 나열로서 존재의 다양성이라는 세계의 상이함을 포용하며 소통하고자 하는 의지를 드러내는 다중적 자아로 시공간의 이동으로 그 모습은 변위 된다. 마치 마우스 커서가 Path를 따라 이동하듯이 시간과 장소, 상황에 맞는 모드 전환을 하여 자신의 일면인 페르소나를 각성한 정체성을 Here 또는 over there에 마주하여 선택한다.
“Human beings have a thousand personas and use them according to the situation.” - Carl Jung
The term ‘persona’ refers to the masks worn by actors in ancient Greece. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung explains that humans have a thousand, ten thousand personas, and they change their outward personality that is reflected to others according to the situation, explaining the essence and diversity of humans. In modern society, it is also called ‘multi-persona’ because people have various identities, changing their masks as if they are changing to fit themselves in various spaces and moments.
The unfamiliar streets and buildings of Tunisia. I slowly walked around and stopped to look at the faces of the buildings. There’s a sense of disconnection from the spaces I’ve lived and experienced. It was a bit disconcerting, yet familiar, like when I face myself in the mirror. There’s an unfamiliar me there. But I’m definitely me. Even the mirror distorts my appearance, what would I look like to others?
My identity, which is bound to urban spaces, is a multiple self that reveals the will to communicate by embracing the world’s diversity of existence through a combination or sequence of images that can empathize with the healing emotions and thoughts that come along with the moments that gradually become organized after the external pressures and undecided thoughts that came during the wandering period when I couldn’t make a decision. Its form is displaced by the movement of time and space, just like a mouse cursor moving along a path. It awakens its persona, a facet of itself, to switch modes according to time, place, and situation, and chooses to face its identity here or over there.
